Costa Rica 10-Day Family Itinerary: Volcanoes, Rainforests & Beaches
A 10-day family itinerary in Costa Rica covering Arenal Volcano, Monteverde cloud forests, and Manuel Antonio beaches.

Days 1–4: Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna
Arrive in San José and travel directly to La Fortuna. Use your first full day to hike through the lava fields of Arenal Volcano National Park, where trails cross ancient lava flows. Unwind in the evening at the area's natural volcanic thermal hot springs.
Spend the following days exploring the region's nature activities:
- La Fortuna Waterfall: Descend 500 steps to the base of this 72-meter waterfall.
- Místico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park: Walk along suspended canopy bridges offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
- Balsa River Rafting: Enjoy family-friendly Class II–III white-water rafting.
Days 5–6: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Transfer to Monteverde via mountain roads. The elevation brings cooler temperatures and lush cloud forest ecosystems. Visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve to walk quiet trails surrounded by orchids, mosses, and high-altitude bird species.
For active excursions, book a family-friendly zipline canopy tour or schedule a guided night walk to spot nocturnal wildlife like tree frogs and kinkajous.
Days 7–10: Manuel Antonio and the Pacific Coast
Head south toward the Pacific coast to reach Manuel Antonio. The popular Manuel Antonio National Park combines tropical rainforest trails with white-sand beaches. Look out for white-faced capuchin monkeys, iguanas, and sloths along the main paths.
Spend your remaining days swimming at Biesanz Beach, taking a coastal kayak tour, or exploring the marina in nearby Quepos before returning to San José for your departure flight.

- Best Time to Visit: The dry season runs from December to April, offering the clearest weather. The greener months of June to August bring occasional afternoon rain but fewer crowds.
